چکیده
—Calliphlox iridescens Gould, 1860 is hypothesized to be a hybrid between Calliphlox amethystina and Chlorostilhon aureoventris. The hybrid, collected at Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro. Brazil, exhibits a blended mosaic of plumage characters of the presumed parental species. External measurements of the hybrid fall between the character means of the parental species and approach the values expected from least squares regression of parental measurements. The miniature woodstar, Calliphlox iridescens Gould, 1860, was described from a unique specimen collected at Nova Friburgo. about 100 km northeast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Gould (1860:310) observed. "If. as 1 believe. I am right in referring this little bird to the genus Calliphlox, it is one of the most remarkable Humming-birds that it has fallen to my lot to describe. In its SUS and form it is very similar to C. ameShystirux, hut in colouring it is like a Chlti-

Diagnoses of hybrid hummingbirds (Aves: Trochilidae). 17. Documentation of the intrageneric hybrid (Archilochus colubris 3 Archilochus alexandri)
—Although the breeding ranges of Archilochus alexandri (Blackchinned Hummingbird) and Archilochus colubris (Ruby-throated Hummingbird) are narrowly parapatric in central Texas and central and southern Oklahoma, there have been few reports of hybridization in the literature and no well-documented hybrid specimens. Here we provide a comprehensive assessment of two male hybrids collected, respecti...
متن کاملA primer on the hybrid zone of Jamaican streamertail hummingbirds (Trochilidae: Trochilus)
—The endemic hummingbirds Trochilus polytmus and T. scitulus hybridize in a narrow zone of secondary contact in eastern Jamaica. The cline in bill width across the hybrid zone represents the steepest morphological gradient documented thus far in avian biology. Hindlimb size and skeletal proxies for core body size, however, exhibit incongruent patterns of variation across the same transect. Sign...
متن کاملHummingbirds have a greatly enlarged hippocampal formation.
Both field and laboratory studies demonstrate that hummingbirds (Apodiformes, Trochilidae) have exceptional spatial memory. The complexity of spatial-temporal information that hummingbirds must retain and use daily is probably subserved by the hippocampal formation (HF), and therefore, hummingbirds should have a greatly expanded HF. Here, we compare the relative size of the HF in several hummin...
متن کاملCompartmentation of the cerebellar cortex of hummingbirds (Aves: Trochilidae) revealed by the expression of zebrin II and phospholipase C beta 4.
The parasagittal organization of the mammalian cerebellar cortex into zones has been well characterized by immunohistochemical, hodological and physiological studies in recent years. The pattern of these parasagittal bands across the cerebellum is highly conserved across mammals, but whether a similar conservation of immunohistochemically defined parasagittal bands occurs within birds has remai...
متن کاملNesting behavior of the swallow-tailed hummingbird, Eupetomena macroura (Trochilidae, Aves).
An August or winter nestling of Eupetomena macroura was fed only every 40-50 min for at least 24 days in the nest, with fewer feedings at midday. As in other hummingbirds, it was brooded only the first week or two, and left alone even on cool nights after 12 days, probably due to the small nest size. The female attacked birds of many non-nectarivore species near the nest, in part probably to av...
